Polyphony

Polyphony consists of the relationship that is generated between 2 or more combined voices. Just as an onion is made up of different layers, a piece of music can also be made up of different sound voices: polyphony plays the game of superimposing 2 or more monophonic voices, which perform different types of movements, and whose simultaneous notes are related by means of the Harmonic interval (iA).

The simplest polyphony is produced by superimposing only 2 voices. If we superimpose 3 (or more) voices, polyphony becomes more complex and the concept of harmony appears. harmonywhich is the vertical relationship between the voices. Harmony generates new elements to be taken into account, such as chords, triads, and triadic iS.

The voices intermingle with each other creating different types of polyphony: if they maintain the same rhythm in all the voices we call it monorhythmic polyphony and, if each voice has a different rhythm we call it polyrhythmic polyphony.
